Vocabulary Activity: Create Your Own Award with Vocabulary

As promised, I mused over vocabulary activities involving awards after receiving approbation as a Best Teacher Blogger from We Are Teachers two weeks ago. The result: I asked my students to create an award-either for themselves or for a friend- acknowledging an accomplishment, big or small.
The results were varied-from hilarious to poignant-but overall this vocabulary activity was a great review for students and a quick way for me to check my students’ knowledge of our current unit of study.
My directions were basic: create a positive award for yourself or a friend, then write a description underneath. Students had to use at least one vocabulary word in the award title, and at least three more in the description.
So far, my favorite has been my student who loves to wear neon yellow. His award:
“Epitome of Neon Award!”
*So bombastic*

We hereby approbate you on your propensity to flout the neon blazoned upon you.
Another lovely example from one friend to another:
The Epitome of Perfection

emblazoned with musical proclivities

always holding oneself with aplomb and sangfroid

erudite and meritorious

incredibly affable and able to ameliorate every situation.

Have some fun creating and then distributing your vocabulary awards-you never know whose day you can make with this fun vocabulary activity!
Common Core Standards:
Language Standard 3. Apply knowledge of language to understand how language functions in different contexts.
Language Standard 4. Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown words
Writing Standard 10. Write routinely over extended time frames and shorter time frames for a range of tasks, purposes, and audiences.
